Formerly active in Cudworth Labour Party, Barnsley, Stirton had been a member of the united front-minded Socialist League in the period before the Second World War.
He joined the Communist Party in 1939 and was in the Royal Navy during the war.
A school teacher, he was a Barnsley Communist Party local election candidate in 1945.
