John Maynard Smith

Smith was born in 1920 to a well-off family; on leaving school, joined the Communist Party when he began an engineering degree at Trinity College Cambridge.

He was an aeronautical engineer during the Second World War.

After a second degree in genetics, tutored by J B S Haldane (see separate entry)  Smith became a lecturer in Zoology at UCL between 1952 and 1965.

He left the Party in 1956 and became Dean of the University of Sussex between 1965–85.

He died in 2004.
